Musicians, singers and dancers will once again fill the alleys and shores of the Venetian Harbor, bringing Cretan tradition to the heart of the city.
The “Traditional Strata” returns to Chania, bringing Cretan music, dance and songs of the place back to the alleys and shores of the Venetian Harbor.
The event, which has been taking place since the summer of 2022, has evolved into one of the city’s most characteristic summer events, connecting local tradition with the experience of visitors. Through the participation of musicians, singers, dancers and cultural associations, the “Traditional Strata” vividly highlights the cultural identity of Chania, transferring elements of Cretan culture to the public space.
The organization is carried out by the Municipality of Chania, in collaboration with the city’s cultural and traditional associations, with the aim of making the local music and dance tradition part of the summer image of Chania.
From the Sailing Club to the Cathedral Square
The “Traditional Strata” is scheduled to take place from Tuesday, June 16th and every Tuesday until September 22nd, at 8:00 PM.
The event will start from the Sailing Club and follow a route through the shores of the Venetian Harbor, before ending at the Cathedral Square. There, the participating clubs will present their main program, with traditional costumes, music, songs and dances that refer to the customs and social life of Crete.
The route through the Venetian Harbor gives the action a strong experiential character, as the tradition is not presented in a closed space, but spreads out within the city, among the points that gather a large part of the summer traffic of Chania.
Sixteen summer evenings with Cretan tradition
In total, this year’s event includes 16 weekly recurring events, creating a steady summer rhythm for the city and its visitors.
Through “Strata”, the cultural associations highlight not only the dances and songs of Crete, but also the traditional costume culture, the collectivity and the character of local customs. The event thus functions as an open cultural experience, connecting the daily movement of the Venetian Port with the intangible cultural heritage of the place.
One of the “Strates” is planned to take place in the Municipal Unit of Nea Kydonia, during the week of celebration of European Urban Mobility, expanding the action beyond the historic center of Chania.
With music, dance and participation from local clubs, the “Traditional Strata” continues to give the city a summer pulse, showcasing Cretan tradition as a living element of Chania’s identity and hospitality.
